A Stage Built for Theater, Coming Full Circle
Long before Riverstage hosted concerts and community festivals, this amphitheater was built for the theater.
The site was constructed in 1959 as the centerpiece of the Metropolitan Boston Arts Center, an ambitious public-private cultural venture on the banks of the Charles. That original vision didn't survive — the complex struggled, and a 1964 fire destroyed much of the original stage and seating, leaving the amphitheater dark for years.
In 1971, theater returned. The Publick Theatre, founded on a shoestring, staged Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors on a makeshift stage lit only by daylight. It was the start of nearly three decades of outdoor theater at Herter Park — full seasons of Shakespeare and classic works, performed under the trees, right where you're sitting tonight.
